Flashbacks of broken soldiers Play like movies in my head Remembering friends that I made The injured and the dead While engaged in battle Bullets flying all around In the midst of a desert storm I suddenly hit the ground Then all was silent Time for me stood still The only thing keeping me alive Was the power of my will They told me my friends were gone I was lucky to survive Said I had some problems but at least I was alive And time moved on It don't wait around for anyone Now I’m waiting at a truckstop Hoping to hitch a ride Sitting on a grassy bank Wheelchair by my side No money in my pocket Got no-one to phone Still fighting like a soldier Trying to get back home Hours passed still had no luck Saw faces etched with raw dismay Held out my thumb to every truck Watched has they turned away time is just floating by daytime losing its light could feel the cold taking hold when neon lit the night drivers flying by like they were in a race all looking any which way to avoid looking at my face I couldn’t understand why They didn’t open up their door It looked to me like they’d never Seen a wheelchair before No money in my pocket Got no-one to phone Still fighting like a soldier Trying to get back home Things were so different In the days when I could stand Before I went off to fight In that far off desert land Before the savagery of war Took the life I had before Now I wait at the roadside For the opening of a door Just been to pay respect To visit friends that I knew The brave who didn’t make it home Shouldn't be the forgotten few Now I just need a ride I’m not asking for too much I’m still fighting like a soldier Just down on my luck No money in my pocket Got no-one to phone Still fighting like a soldier Trying to get back home looking for some justice for the broken and the poor I'm still a soldier fighting It's just a different war

Opfer der Zeit

By Roland Köhler
