Matters of the Heart

(Brian Hendrix)

This one just popped into my head while I was trying to get to sleep. It shares a similar title with other songs, but the lyrics here are totally unique. I like the premise of it and how it turned out. Could fit into multiple genres, depending on any type of arrangement one wanted to put to it.

She was his lover, since their high-school days After college, he left, went their separate ways He was chasin' his dreams, after the gold Thought things that shined bright would light up his soul Then he said, worse than loneliness, this is all there is All the money I've made and nothing to spend The wrong turn, I'm on the wrong track I'd give this nothingness up just to have her back (Chorus) 'Cause nothing matters but matters of the heart You gotta tend to 'em first before you fall all apart You'll never win extra time; you only got what you get Every blink of the eye, there goes another tick Make time enough for healin', time enough for lovin' The time is now for you to start... Leave all of those meaningless things behind 'Cause nothing matters but matters of the heart A little girl just couldn't wait to leave her town There's a big ol' flashy world spinnin' 'round and 'round She set out to see it, and left her family behind There holdin' down the roots while she rides the skyline Then she cried, they don't know me here; they don't even care I've been all around but ain't gone anywhere I coulda seen this all from a postcard Home with my people, is where I belong (Chorus) (Bridge) The dreams you chase The things you can't touch Go on and put them away Make sure you stay near love (Chorus)

Made Me An Outlaw

By Brian Hendrix

Part of my "Judge" series of old western songs that I like to write whenever an idea pops in my head. This one is about a poor man in the old west with a family to feed, and he decides that some people have too much and he doesn't have nearly enough. He decides to become an outlaw. This was a very true story for the time, though it's not based on any real-life person.

Oh, Amanda

By Brian Hendrix

I have a habit of writing songs about women's names. Not sure why, but I usually end up really liking them. There's no real story to this one at all. What I like about it is that it can be plug-and-play with any name that fits at the end. Rebecca, Cassandra, Jennifer, whatever. It works.

Most Days

By Brian Hendrix

A song I wrote about a situation where a girl called me hostile, and I said she was cold. The rest kind of just wrote itself. Despite some of the lines seeming a bit on the dark side, it's actually much more of an upbeat love song.

The Bones of America

By Brian Hendrix

For Americans, it doesn't rightly matter which of the two political parties are in office; it ends up being the same result: Life becomes harder for Americans, as we lose more and more of our freedoms. Each side blames the other, and people just stay angry. For me, I think of America like Atlantis, in the sense that everything good about it is seemingly buried. I wrote this song to reflect that feeling.

She never plays fair

By Howard Aronson

This lyric could be about a relationship, or just a friendship where the person doesn't care that you're caught in a web so to speak. Time and time again they let you down, but you keep going back for more. They find it amusing that you do, and they turn up the heat and do it even more. Basically they don't care at all, and think it's funny that you try so hard and they have total control over you. This happens all too often in relationship and friendships. That's because people are so consumed with themselves, it's so selfish that they take whatever they can get from a friendship or a relationship and just keep on going without reciprocating.

Rhythms We Breathe

By Jones Lyrics

Topic(s): It works in a team/relationship, even if sometimes it looks like giving up on our own selves. Permanent self doubts ending in harmonic optimism. Atmosphere: fast, happy, euphoric, to pogo or dance on, breaking through, pushing forward, eventually scream, loud, wild Genre/Style I was thinking of: Indi-Pop, Singer/Songwriter, Indi-Electronic, Alternative, Alternative Rock Artist(s) I was thinking of: Friska Viljor, Phil Might Leave, Mando Diao, Kings of Leon, Ezra Furman, Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand, Milky Chance... Comments: Typical pop structure. Pre-Chorus & Outro. Outro can come fluently after the chorus & can be repeated multiple times, so that phrases will sound the opposite way around: It works out if we believe, in same rhythms, that we breathe..... So, it can end on "breathe".
