The Cave

(Douglas Butler)

A unique narrative story-song written as a duet between two distinct characters: a wry, world-weary cave guide and a curious, bright-eyed visitor. The lyric is atmospheric and contemplative, exploring themes of time, wonder, and human connection against a backdrop of natural silence. Its simple AAAA chorus is highly memorable, while the dialogue structure is perfect for Indie Folk Duets, Cinematic Ballads, or Musical Theater scenes.

The Cave [Intro] (Male vocalist, wry and human) Morning, old friend, the bus rolls in again Whispers and laughter, their curious din I’m half awake, but their wonder’s still new Come on, friend, let’s show them what’s true. [Verse 1 - Part A] (Female vocalist, curious and playful) “Hey, Mr. Ranger, is this cave really real? Or did giants just pile stones like giant’s will?” [Verse 1 - Part B] (Male vocalist, amused but tired) “An old favorite, that—gets me every time. No giants, just water, and a million years of time. But look close, my friend—see the way it hangs? Every single drop is a story that time brings.” [Chorus] (Male and Female vocals together, soft with echoes) This cave is a story written in stone, A quiet kingdom where light's unknown. Where questions and shadows find their home, And we’re just whispers passing through the stone. [Verse 2 - Part A] (Female vocalist, bright-eyed) “Do bats live here, or is Batman just in disguise? Could he swing through these caverns and surprise?” [Verse 2 - Part B] (Male vocalist with a smirk) “No capes, no masks, just a restless flutter, A thousand tiny heartbeats, a nervous stutter. They find their way home not with a signal from above, But on waves of sound—a language made of love.” [Chorus] (Together, softly) This cave is a story written in stone, A quiet kingdom where light's unknown. Where questions and shadows find their home, And we’re just whispers passing through the stone. [Verse 3 - Part A] (Female vocalist, mischievous) “Can I touch that rock there? Just a tiny chip— For my sister, I swear, I’ll be careful, not hard.” [Verse 3 - Part B] (Male vocalist, dry humor) “Nice try, my friend, but hands off the art, Each finger leaves a crack, and that breaks the heart. A million years for a single drop to create, This cave’s slow dance you don’t want to frustrate.” [Chorus] (Together, with a whisper) This cave is a story written in stone, A quiet kingdom where light's unknown. Where questions and shadows find their home, And we’re just whispers passing through the stone. [Verse 4 - Part A] (Female vocalist, thoughtful) “Is it always this dark? Don’t you miss the light? The sun’s bright blush or the birds in flight?” [Verse 4 - Part B] (Male vocalist, reflective) “Sunlight’s a stranger beneath these stone halls, But darkness here’s a blanket XX XXXXXXX XXXXXX XXXXXXXXX X XXXXX XX XXX XXXXXXX XXXX XXXXXX XXX XXXXX XXXXX XXXXXXX X XXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXX XXXXXX XXXXXXXX XXXX XXXX XX X XXXXX XXXXXXX XX XXXXXX X XXXXX XXXXXXX XXXXX XXXXXXX XXXXXXXX XXXXX XXXXXXXXX XXX XXXXXXX XXXX XXXXX XXXXX XXX XXXXXXX XXXX XXXXXXXX XXXXXXX XXXXXXX XXX XXXXXX XXXXXX X X XXXX XX XXXXXXX XXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXX XXXXX XXXXX XXXX XXXXXXX XXXXX XXXXXXX XXXXXX XXX XXXXXXXX XXX XXXXXXX XXXX XXXXXXX XX XXXXXXXXX XXXXXX X X XXXX XX XXXXX XXXXXXXXX XXX XXXXX XXXX XXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX XXXXX X XXXXXX XXXXX XXXXXX XXXXX XXXX XXXXX XXXX XXX XXXXXXX XXXXXXX XXXXX XXXXX XXXX XXX X XXXX XXXX XXX XXXX XXXXX XX XXXXXX XXX XXXXXXX XXXX XXXXX XXX XXXXXXXX XXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXX XXXX XXXX XX X XXXXX XXXXXXX XX XXXXXX X XXXXX XXXXXXX XXXXX XXXXXXX XXXXXXXX XXXXX XXXXXXXXX XXX XXXXXXX XXXX XXXXX XXXXX XXX XXXXXXX XXXX XXXXXXXX XXXXXXX XXXXXXX XXX XXXXXX XXXXXXX XXXXX XXXXXXXXX XXXXXXX XXXX XXXXXXXX XXXXX XXXXXX XXX XX X XXXXX XXXX XXX XXX XXX XXXXXXX XXXXX XXXXX XXXXXX XXXXX XXXXXX XXX XXXXXXX XXXXXXX XXXXXX XXX XXXXX XXXX XXXXXXXXX XXXX XXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX XXXX XXXXX XXXXXX XXXXX XXXXX XXXX XXXXX XXXXXXXXXXX XXX XXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXX XXXXXXX

Whiskey Wallowing

By Derek Carter

A confessional and emotionally heavy lyric, “Whiskey Wallowing” follows a broken man hiding behind liquor, small talk, and temporary company while still clinging to the ghost of a past love. It explores the cycle of self-destruction and denial, where every sip is an escape and every distraction is just a reminder of the one he truly misses.

A Vow of Blood and Bone

By Dawn Isbell Wilson

This song is loosely based on the poem Christabel by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. I had so much fun writing "She Walks the Graveyard" that I decided to create one with an even more Gothic theme. I found an old poem which I had, at first, intended to update for modern times but the more I thought about it, the less I wanted to keep the story, let alone modernize it. I love the Gothic theme of the poem, rich with moonlit woods, spectral presences, and ambiguous evil. However, as I started writing it, the more I wanted to twist the tale into something completely different. I hope you enjoy reading these lyrics when we enter into the season of pumpkins, bats, ghosts, and hobgoblins, or just whenever the mood strikes.

tired of pain

I wrote this song after I broke up with my ex boyfriend - I was trying so hard on this relationship and I really wanted it to work but somehow I was the only one who was fighting - after the breakup I was so down and sad and heartbroken because I just wanted a love that lasts and that is real and this is what the song is about - I doubted myself being enough

Exit Interview with God

By Dawn Wilson

It has always disturbed me how some parents, children, or friends can calmly accept an idea that their loved ones might burn for an ETERNITY while they walk the streets of gold, playing harps, or whatever. It’s sad that so many millions of people cling to the cruellest, most horrendous god belief because they are afraid of hell. You have to be some kind of monster, yourself, to truly worship a god that would have created eternal torment for finite crimes. Especially, the crime of disbelief. If I actually believed for one moment that…wait, I honestly did believe it. For three years, from the age of 12 to 15, I was tormented by the idea of my family being tortured forever and ever. Their only crime? Disbelief. I was willing to suffer that same fate because the idea of a heaven without them was unthinkable to me. When I left the church, I fully believed I would go to hell and I didn’t care because I was done worshipping a monster.
