The carnival game Whack-A-Mole is a good metaphor for how we deal with our shortcomings; every time we deal with one, another pops up. This is especially true of our love life, as the narrator in the song finds out.

So Far So Good brings new life to the old joke, plumbing the despair of a man who encounters a woman who he hopes is his salvation but proves to be anything but. It's dark humor should proved a good counterpoint to a rollicking tune.
