Hammer chastises the nail,
Nail to wood
And wood to pain.
Grandfather is the nail,
Wood is the Negro
And the carpenter is the Negro’s war.
Hand to work
Saw harshly cuts wood
Nail sings and cry
To the carpenters’ gentle hack.
Who sung so roughly?
Grandfather?
The Negro?
Isn’t it the heaviness of the fallen flesh?
Carpenter’s hand to hammer
Hammer to repression to nail
Nail to pain to wood
Wood to coffin
Coffin to dust
Dust to forehead
Forehead to dust
And dusty blanches the carpenter’s flesh.
Liberation! liberation!
Nail and wood.
