A Song to Auld Lang Syne

(Dawn Isbell Wilson)

This my nostalgic tribute to New Year’s Eve. This swing-inspired ballad begins with idea of warmth and celebration with champagne toasts. I was born long after the Swing era ended, but this is the music I remember listening to as a child, often in the old B&W movies we’d watch on television on Christmas and New Year’s Eve. But beneath the sparkle lies a deeper plea: to remember the pain that shaped our music, the truths that built our nation, and the voices too often scrubbed from history. I invite you to honor the past. All of it, not just the parts we cherish, but the ones we must reckon with. It’s a toast to memory, a warning against erasure, and a reminder that beauty and justice are born from truth. Whether you’re dancing with your sweetheart or sitting by the fire, let this song be your ritual: a melody for the turning of the year, and a vow to never forget.

Verse Each New Year’s Eve brings promise And the thoughts of long ago We find our special solace In places that we know On each New Year we ponder Asking what our futures hold Still looking back with wonder At those brighter days of old Chorus We sing a song of Auld Lang Syne With glasses of champagne On this evening, we define How we’ll sing our last refrain   Verse Our hearts beat to the rhythm Echoes from the distant past Our history through prisms And beauty unsurpassed We must try to understand The music born from anguish Try to let our hearts expand Till bigotry is vanquished Bridge As this year comes to a close Let’s look deep within our souls Don’t’ scrub the past to soothe our shame Stop pointing fingers, stop laying blame We can’t afford to lose the past Without the truth we will not last All stories die with a past wiped clean Not just the ones you want to screen Keep every voice alive in song Hold fast to the dream Remember the wrong Outro We sing a song of Auld Lang Syne From music born from pain From the truth we can’t resign Till we sing our last refrain

Ghosts of Midwinter

By Dawn Isbell Wilson

When I set out to write “Ghosts of Midwinter”, my plan was to begin with a verse that spoke of the fun Victorian tradition of telling scary stories on Christmas Eve. This tradition is far older than the Victorians, but it was going to be my starting point, and my song was going to morph into a ghost story. That was the plan, anyway. But as I read a bit more, I decided to go back to the Pagan celebrations, the building of Stonehenge, then how the Romans embraced Christianity (starting with the upper classes). In spite of all efforts, and even though many “lower class” Romans became Christian, the Winter Solstice traditions could not be squashed. By the end, I had a song that whispers both history and mythology. But most of all, the very nature of the human spirit. I hope once again that everyone, however, you celebrate the season (with or without gods), finds ways to come together in peace and in love.

The Cost of Silence

By Dawn Isbell Wilson

This protest song born was of rage and urgency. I wrote it in response to the hypocrisy of those who claim to “protect women and girls” while stripping away our rights, ignoring our voices, and weaponizing fear against trans people, immigrants, and anyone who doesn’t fit their narrow mold. I’ve heard too many white, cis men suddenly concerned about women’s sports; men who never cared until it became a tool for exclusion. Meanwhile, women are dying because their reproductive rights have been erased. The only protection we need is from those who claim to speak for us while silencing us. This song is a reckoning. A reminder of what happens when we don’t speak out. I remembered the words of Martin Niemöller: "First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me." So I wrote a version for America, 2025.

In Autumn's Glow

By Dawn Isbell Wilson

I began writing this as a seasonal song, something to follow my three Halloween pieces, a reflection on November, the end of autumn, and the quiet preparation for winter. But as I wrote, a memory surfaced. Years ago, my not-yet-husband and I were walking briskly on a beautiful spring day when we came up behind an elderly couple, strolling hand in hand. We slowed our pace, not wanting to pass them. My husband leaned in and whispered, “That will be us someday.” I smiled and then imagined a future where we’d walk that same path, still bundled in our winter coats, and a young couple might see us and say, “That will be us someday.” This song is dedicated to him, and to all couples, young and old. Cherish each other. Savor every season. And most of all, plan for winter.

Love For a Lifetime

By Dawn Isbell Wilson

In the 42nd year of our marriage, my husband and I never stopped being in love. Of course there were difficult times, of course there was bickering. We started out the right way, lots of couples do (and some don’t). I don’t know if I can give anyone the secret formula for a marriage that lasts a lifetime. Even if I could, not everyone will listen. Most don’t. “A Love for a Lifetime” is dedicated to my husband. He still makes me laugh and every day I find another reason why I married him, why I love him.
