Hillsborough

(Edward McBride)

On April 15 1989 Two English football teams Liverpool and Nottingham Forest met in the FA Cup semi-final at the neutral ground of Sheffield Wednesday, Hillsborough. English football will remember its deepest shame as a different age, the appalling crush on unsafe terraces with fenced-in-"pens" for supporters, deemed suitable by the Football Association. 97 people lost their lives as the police continued to push fans in until the barriers crashed. To this day despite inquests police have refused to accept responsibility for their negligence. The families of the victims for the past 35 years have fought and some died in their quest for justice. The failures of the legal system lead to Justice delayed is justice denied. RIP and You'll never walk alone.

Gathered there to cheer and sing Hopeful hearts with dreams to bring But in those fenced-in-pens, a shadow loomed Ninety-seven souls, in sorrow, consumed Liverpool’s faithful, in the crush they lay As the force of the crowd swept them away Onto the field, in silent pour The Kop stood still, it’s roar no more Chorus To chase your fear, a cup in sight But never to return home in the night Yet you’ll never walk alone, you’ll see In the hearts of those who set you free Anfield’s pitch, now a bed of flowers As voices cry for justice powers Yet the authorities, they turn away No accountability they say Two cops and a lawyer, scapegoats found While justice’s wheels, they turn around But the match commander, he walks away Leaving behind the price to pay Chorus To chase your team, a cup in sight But never to return home in the night Yet you’ll never walk alone, you’ll see In the hearts of those who set you free Bridge Thirty-five years have come and gone Yet the pain still lingers on Emotional scars run deep and wide As we remember those who’ve died Outro No justice for the ninety-seven Their voices silenced, but still in heaven In our hearts, their memory thrives As we keep their spirit alive

No Safe Places

By Kurt Baty

An incisive look into the ineptness of our leaders in the immediate aftermath of mass shootings. "No Safe Places" astutely observes the gun culture climate; the senseless blame game; and the absurd solutions of the G.O.P. that inevitably follows.

Fever

By Zachary Stump

A song about drug addiction. The way the world is these days, there’s no point in sobriety and yet everyone treats drugs like a sickness. Well if I’m sick then the doctor better fix me.
