Child's Play
Description of two people who are interested/involved in each other but are not connecting. Both are afraid, or too proud, or otherwise deterred. Inwardly they care deeply, but they can't seem to will themselves to the place of vulnerability.

A game of hide-and-seek for two:
you run from me,
I run from you,
the endless game that tears inside.
We want to touch;
instead we hide and peek at one another
from behind the masks we wear.
We spy from darkened corners, black
Compelled to hold our feelings back
Lest the other know about
The secrets that we won’t let out
The words that stifle in our throats
Confessions we don’t dare.
A game of hide-and-seek for two:
you search for me,
I search for you,
but every time the long chase ends
we race away and hide again
and toss our heads assuredly
as if we didn’t care.
