Measure of a Man
This is one of those stream of consciousness type of lyrics; it's partly inspired by recently reading the 'autobiography' of MLK, but more generally, it's about the duality that can exist in one person - that they can be both good and bad.

You told me that love is all words and emotions
But you know I’m a poet who’s fallen from his pulpit
I bent the arc towards justice but I snapped yours in my hand
I know the proof of burdens tough when it’s your word against a mans
If I thought they’d listen, I ask god for forgiveness
But I know I killed your faith and made you bear witness
So I don’t think we’re on speaking terms
I confess I fear the worst
Without you I’m nothing but words
Empty words...
I told them I got
Chorus:
The measure of a man
The measure of a man
But I don’t live to the standard
That I said that we all can
If you tear it apart you can reassemble the pieces
But the stitches don’t last when loves betrayal is repeated
And I know you fear that the hurt is gonna beat us
But every time it feels done we make it across those bridges
It seems people think in love I’m a modern Jesus
But you know I got as many sins as I got believers
From sins of flesh onto the cross
I was leading you to love
But on the way I got us lost
We’re so lost….
I told them I got
Chorus:
The measure of a man
The measure of a man
But I don’t live to the standard
That I said that we all can
Middle 8/Break:
And I had a dream…. of a place without sorrow
And I had a dream… of a place without pain
And I had a dream… I may not get there with you
But I had this dream… that I believe in all the same
I know to believe in love you must overcome your fear
But hate is just to great a burden to have to bear
It’s a burning cross that can sometimes feel too much
But when you look at what we got what else is enough
There are statues that deserve to be pulled to ground
But good and evil both exist within the measure of a man
The measure of a man
The measure of a man
The measure of a man
