Haunted Honky Tonk

(Melanie Thompson)

I wrote these lyrics in tribute to country music. And to honor my country music heroes. May the ghost of country music live on. Enjoy!

Verse 1. Cold dark night on an interstate highway. Had an appetite for some Tennessee corn whiskey. Drove my diesel down a long dirty road. Followed the scent of a wood-burning stove. Old town bar with an old bartender. Asked for the best in a glass, tall and slender. Had no glass. Just one rusty cup. Sat at the bar. And drank my whiskey up. Past midnight. Place was dead. Cup was empty. Doubted to myself that it would ever come alive. Hey bartender! Where's the crowd? Where's the ladies? He twirled his pointing finger to turn my head around. Chorus. Haunted honky tonk. Blue grass sprouting up through the cracks. Haunted honky tonk. Muddy river water flowing out the tap. Haunted honky tonk. Rhinestone and leather chandelier. Haunted honky tonk. The ghost of country music living here. Verse 2. One spotlight brighter than the others. Light so bright, had to cover-up my eyes. Back to life. Back from the bitter grave. The great Patsy Cline singing up on the stage. Two slow songs. I just couldn't take another. My tears were falling, falling down like country rain. In the men's room, splashed water on my face. Creaky door behind me opened up and in walked Hank. There he stood. He was alive. He was immortal. I surmised, somehow I'd stumbled on a portal. My hand out, uttered, "I'm your biggest fan". He said, "Let me do my bussiness, sir. Then I'll shake your hand." Chorus. Haunted honky tonk. Blue grass sprouting up through the cracks. Haunted honky tonk. Muddy river water flowing out the tap. Haunted honky tonk. Rhinestone and leather chandelier. Haunted honky tonk. The ghost of country music living here. Verse 3. Corner booth. I saw two arms wrestling. Who was the best, what it was, they were testing. Locked in tight. Tooth-to-tooth the two were dueling. Earl Scruggs and Lester Flatt, two brothers who weren't fooling. Loud bar fight, spreading out from the billards. Two cowboys. Redneck woman jumping in. Oh my Lord! Miss Loretta kicked her boots off. Long neck bottles spinning out and clipping chins. Cheek to cheek, there were two bodies swaying on an old pine floor hold 'em up 'cause they been praying. Newly wed. Seemed to be. Tell by their blushing. George Jones and Tammy, finally no more fussing. Chorus. Haunted honky tonk. Blue grass sprouting up through the cracks. Haunted honky tonk. Muddy river water flowing out the tap. Haunted honky tonk. Rhinestone and leather chandelier. Haunted honky tonk. The ghost of country music living here. Verse 4. Heard last call. After that, no more alcohol. Tomorrow's show, Waylon Jennings takes the stage. Hey bartender! Thank the owner, I did ask. "You can thank me yourself, friend. Hello, I'm Johnny Cash". Chorus. Haunted honky tonk. Blue grass sprouting up through the cracks. Haunted honky tonk. Muddy river water flowing out the tap. Haunted honky tonk. Rhinestone and leather chandelier. Haunted honky tonk. The ghost of country music living here.

Mr. Cool

By Andrea Pflüger
