Pirate Age Serenade
The tales of pirates and their shenanigans throughout history were inflated to promote drama and excitement. But, in reality a pirate's life was hard, tedious and at times boring. Verse 1. I've sailed many seas through my ages with pirates.
Anchored off islands unknown to the kings of Spain and England,
intending to hang us, we the infamous, murderous thieves.
Fond memory I carry of my mother Mary.
A pirate revered both by captain and crew.
Secure in her belly, the size of a cherry, knew life as a pirate
once born I would choose.
Verse 2. First infant steps blurry for I in my hurry
would manage to hit every deck post in sight.
I wobbled and stumbled, collided and tumbled,
'til learning ship's riggings could stand me upright.
My stint as a green horn meant scrapping off seaworms,
oiling the pulleys and killing the rats,
scrub bulkheads and cannons, mend sails, run ship errands,
while maintaining watch for potential attacks.
Verse 3. My rite of passage left me with deep gashes,
but not from the whips or the lashes I bore.
The scars on my body, rut markings carved in me,
were made by my hob-nobs with daughters of joy.
Was cut-throat in long-boat, hooked railings, walked tight-ropes,
boarded prize vessels and emptied their holds.
Swiped sot-weed and rices, rum, sugar, spices.
But, none as enticing as silver or gold.
Verse 4. Was first mate to captain, a blood-thirsty madman
excessively cruel so we left him marooned.
The wind blew our full-sail and just as the sun fell,
I became captain, by majority rule.
I've circled the globe one hundred times over.
If blind, I could do it. No compass. No maps.
My peglegs are sturdy. The ship still sea worthy.
I'll die at her helm, if given the chance.
