The Songs We'll Never Hear
A melancholic song about a shy but talented musician whose music most people will never hear because she'll never get discovered.

Sitting on the basement steps
With her grandfather’s guitar,
Playing chords in steady reps,
Not getting very far.
And she sings of the songs we’ll never hear,
The faces we’ll never see,
The unimagined tear
That flows invisibly.
One year too late for American Idol,
Ten years too early for the wildcard game,
Standing ready lying idle
In front of Joni Mitchell’s picture frame.
Can only sing of the songs nobody knows,
The faces they don’t care about,
The tear that only flows
During a years-long drought.
TikTok and YouTube are bursting to the brim
With the light from tomorrow’s stars,
But the florescents in the basement remain dim
Though not enough to hide growing scars.
Still singing the songs no one will hear
With the face no one will see
While the well-imagined tear
Flows eternally.
