Genius

(Melanie Thompson)

I will be the first to say that I'm not the brightest bulb in the ceiling. But I have learned that hate corrodes. It harms others as well as myself. As I get older, it gets clearer. We need more love in this world. I hope these lyrics show that our ability to empathize and accept others is more valuable than any educational trophies we may have collected throughout our lives.

Verse 1. Einstein sits in outer space keeping tabs on the human race. He's watching the clock and hoping we're not about to nuke ourselves. Pavlov throws his dog a bone. Plays a tune on his xylophone. Repeating the verses. What could be worse is, we keep fooling ourselves. Chorus. You don't have to be a genius. Calculate the wrong from right. You don't have to have a big brain. Separate the truth from hype. You can see it with your own eyes. Empathize. You can relate. Even the smallest heart can be torn apart by hate. Verse 2. Darwin sleeps in a cozy cave dreaming about those good old days. When nature was braver and all were in favor of changing ourselves. Freud hangs out at a local bar snorting some brandy, puffing cigars. Thinking out loud he yells to the crowd, "Go on and screw yourselves". Chorus. You don't have to be a genius. Calculate the wrong from right. You don't have to have a big brain. Separate the truth from hype. You can see it with your own eyes. Empathize. You can relate. Even the smallest heart can be torn apart by hate. Verse 3. Tesla cooks in a microwave the chicken pot pie that his mother made. Setting the table knows we are able to energize ourselves. The Great Houdini swims alone at night in a pink bikini, never fits just right. Stares at the full moon feeling that too soon we will doom ourselves. Chorus. You don't have to be a genius. Calculate the wrong from right. You don't have to have a big brain. Separate the truth from hype. You can see it with your own eyes. Empathize. You can relate. Even the smallest heart can be torn apart by hate. Even our innocence can be ripped to bits by hate. Loving all living souls can break the hold of hate.

Will-O'-the-Wisp

By Melanie Thompson

Happy Halloween. This October has had some very scary days. We have mass shootings. We have war. We have in-fighting amongst the populous. Everyone seems to have a bone to pick. When I was little, I enjoyed Halloween. The costumes. The free candy. The decorations. It was fun. This Halloween not so much. Will-o'-the-Wisp is a deceiver. He is an evil that seems to be everywhere. These lyrics unmask him.

Polly Loves Othello

By Melanie Thompson

These lyrics are an adaptation from a play written by Shakespeare. The play is quite long and at times hard to read. So, I gave up and read the cliff notes. I tried to capture the spirit of the tragedy. It is not word for word. And I made a lot of changes. It was that wonderful name he gave to the main character that intrigued me, Othello. What a great name. Also, in writing these lyrics, I thought about how humans recall things. We remember events by experiencing them with our senses. Have you ever smelled something and immediately remembered an event that smelled like that? Roses smell like my high school prom. Vanilla smells like Christmas. Sounds also can send us back in time. Loud bangs put me in a warzone. Lawnmowers remind me of summer. You get the picture. Enjoy.

Easy Peaches

By Melanie Thompson

I love peaches. Nothing better. But there are other life forms that I am certain love them more. I dedicate these lyrics to the lovers of fruit. The ones with two legs and the ones with two wings. The ending is a bit bitter, but Mother Nature brought us into this world, and she can take us out. Enjoy.

A free therapist

By Eetu Ekholm

When people confide in you, you see and hear all sorts of things. Some good some bad. You can try to help, but if the people themselves aren't willing to accept your help and change, you are just left with a person using you to cope. A free therapist with no boundaries. They suck the life out of you, with the cost of your kindness.
